ABOUT SAMITY BHAVAN

ADDRESS OF THE ASSOCIATION (HISTORY OF SAMITY BHAVAN)

This is a brief description about Samity Bhavan: Bengal Sub Ordinate Education Service Recruitment Rules of 1940 vide Memo No. 618 Edn (A) date: 13-06-1940 published the rules for the recruitment of Sub Ordinate Education Service officers in British India, which have been revised several times since independence and are in the present state. That is, WBSubES Cadre was born in 1940.

Organizing meetings in British India was tantamount to treason. Even at the time of independence when it was against the law to hold meetings, a temporary association of 10 members was formed on February 21, 1956, which became full-fledged in December 1956 with the formation of the first Ad Hoc Committee of the association. In 1957 the full working committee was formed. General Secretary Ramrenu Mukherjee, then SI of Schools of Bhangar Circle. In September 1958, the first registration of societies under the Society Registration Act of 1860 began. The application form was submitted in February 1960 and the registration of the association was completed in November of that year. The address of the Society at that time was the home address of the Society’s First Hon’ble Ramrenu Mukherjee Mukherjee – 39, Kasundia Road, Howrah, till 1968, when Ramrenu Babu was the Secretary. In 1968, the new leadership came into charge at the Banipur conference.

Ever since the association was formed, the search for a permanent office space for the association continued. But that was not possible given the financial situation of the inspectors at that time. At that time inspectors from Calcutta would meet on weekends at the Maidan or at places adjacent to Victoria, discussions could not be arranged sitting in their own offices. After 1970, with the help of a teachers’ association, the association was working on a shifting basis in the premises of that teachers’ association at Koley Market. Since then the address of the Society is -Room No 7A,3rd Floor, Koley Market, Calcutta -700012.

Later probably since 1985 the association had two addresses simultaneously, the other being – 2, Church Lane, 2nd Floor, Kolkata-700001

The scope of work of the association was increasing day by day. There was no room for the work of the two organizations in Kole Market. So the search for new office space continues. The time is around 1988 or later.

In this situation, a house was found on Pataldanga Street. A publisher bought a large house in Patal Danga Street, for publishing purposes. Samitha’s work continued by renting a house from him.

Address : 23, Pataldanga Street, 1st Floor, Calcutta – 700009. This was the last temporary office of the Samiti, after the purchase of the Samiti building, it continued to function as the branch office of the Samiti till 1996-97.

The search for a permanent building for the association continued since the eighties. A few were found, but due to climate and financial reasons far from the main city of Calcutta, the association leadership did not show much interest. Finally found at Heromb Das Lane, 200 meters from College Street. There were two girls’ schools in Bengali medium. One secondary, one primary. The building housed the primary on one floor and the secondary girls’ school on two floors. As the secondary school was about to close, there were 5-6 female students. In this situation the association is complete from the school authorities.

Buys the building. Since there were only 5-6 students in the secondary school, the school was run in two floors, the houses of the association were renovated, and the association office was run. Later the secondary school came up but the primary school was running on one floor. After some time the primary school also became closed due to students. The school closed completely when the last teacher of the school retired.

In 1992-93, the purchase of the building at 5/2 Heromb Das Lane began. The association leadership appealed to all members for financial assistance. A huge amount of money is needed to buy the building. All the members came forward. What emotion in everyone, own building, own office!!!! Everyone contributed a part of their salary, “This building has to be bought, we will give whatever money is needed”. Finally, probably by 1993-94, the building was registered in the name of the society. The association got a roof over its head. The association building was built by the tireless labor and money of those members, there are not many of them today. But the debt he has passed on to posterity is irreparable. Their respect, salutation.

Address of the Society is – 5 / 2 Heramba Chandra Das Lane; Kolkata-700009

Every brick, wood, door and window of the Samiti Bhaban has the touch, passion, compassion and love of those formers. Apart from the members personally donating to Samiti Bhavan, many district committees have also donated, for example, the organizing committee of the 35th State Conference held in Baharampur in 2002 has gifted the TV set to the Samiti Bhavan.

The rooms on the second floor were not being used. So it was decided that if the members of Dur Durant come to Kolkata, they will have the opportunity to stay overnight, so accommodation will be arranged in the two-story rooms at a small price. By 2005 06 Toktaposh was brought from Haldia. 14 beds are provided. Another incentive is that when you come to Kolkata, you can stay in your own home, you don’t have to travel from hotel to hotel.

The year 2006 is the golden jubilee year of the association. It was decided to build a library of the association. The library will be occupied by two rooms next to the conference room of Tetla. Again a call to the members, “Donate whatever books you can”. Everyone donated some books, many donated very rare books from private collections. A rich library was developed by the donations of every member of the society. The association’s library was inaugurated with great enthusiasm, by the then Hon Minister of Libraries.  It was a prosperous time for the association.

After buying the building, it was not possible to renovate it. The need for renovation has been felt for several years, cracks are appearing in several parts of the building, roof beams have collapsed, and masonry iron has come out. Every monsoon this wound gets worse. It will not be right to delay any longer, so the current leadership has started the renovation of the building. Again, cooperation is needed. The current leadership of the association is therefore reiterating financial support to every association member and alumni. Appeal to every Samiti Mind Inspector please help us to preserve this asset of Samiti which we have inherited.
